Star Trek Into Darkness Weak $84 Million Domestic Box Office Follows Paramount Video Game Flop

Forbes - Despite having a decent Metacritic rating of 73, the Star Trek Into Darkness movie failed to build on the domestic success that the original JJ Abrams reboot had established four years ago. The film, which was forecast to break the $100 million barrier over its extended weekend launch, made just $84 million ($2 million Wednesday, $11.5 million Thursday, $22 million Friday, $27.2 million Saturday and an estimated $21.2 million Sunday). And thats the second consecutive piece of bad news for Paramount Pictures.
The Hollywood studio, which officially entered the Star Trek video game space with Digital Extremes Star Trek: The Video Game in April, crashed and burned with that interactive adventure. That game, which had a full three years of development because of Star Trek IIs delay, still felt rushed when it hit store shelves and was plagued with glitches galore. That resulted in a horrendous 39 Metacritic score on PC (the most powerful platform) and a 43 and 46 rating on...

Gaming Union: "Star Trek: The Video Game turns out to be another dismal entry into the film/video game sub-genre and it's one that fans of the Star Trek and gaming would do well to avoid. Despite the pedigree of Digital Extremes behind it, there isn't much to recommend aside from the story. The gameplay mechanics are very dated and everything about the experience seems as watered down as possible. There are small glimpses of what might have been here and there, but that's just not good enough."

CSM - While the premise of Star Trek is very appealing -- stepping into the shoes as Kirk and Spock, even at the same time with a friend in co-op mode (online or beside you) -- the game has a number of problems ranging from lackluster and repetitive missions to sloppy Gears of War-inspired combat to shoddy graphics to enemy artificial intelligence (A.I.) that is far from intelligent.

It seems odd that a game based on the Star Trek reboot that has nothing to do with the movie that inspired it, was released years later, and had its release back to coincide with the sequel film. Star Trek by Namco Bandai Games most certainly boldly goes in a direction that one could expect in a game with such a development cycle would. Eric Kelly of Gametactics reviews the latest Star Trek game for the Xbox 360.

iOS.AppsGoer writes:"If there are two things the App Store has absolutely no shortage of, they are collectible card games and games based on movies. Despite this, Star Trek Rivals is a collectible card game for iOS based on the movie Star Trek (2009) and its newly released sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. "

There was a time when all tie-in games for blockbuster movies were rancid third-person shooters or annoyingly simple side-scrolling platformers.
Thankfully, though, developers on the App Store have put an end to that sad state of affairs.
So, yeah, action-packed cinematic epics are now being turned into boring multiplayer card games instead. Hmmm.
Whereas the Fast Furious 6 game release...
